Cygnaran Storm: Stormsmith Stormcaller

The Cygnaran Storm continues with the another storm-named model: Stormsmith Stormcaller.

Though they come in a three-pack, the Stormsmiths are not a unit, but a three individual solos all costed at 1pt each. Being on a 1pt solo, the Stormsmiths are very dangerous to an opponent, especially one that relies upon stealth support solos like Eiryss or Gorman. And with the advent of the Stormwall and its Stormpods, the Stormsmiths are finding themselves on the table more often than ever.

Call the Lightning

The Stormsmiths have one job: to hit things with lightning, or Stormcall as the ability is called. But the reason they are so great is because they are not making an attack, they are making a skill check.  So regardless of the defense of the target, the Stormsmiths only need to roll an 8 or less. Since it’s not a ranged or magic attack, this also ignores stealth, meaning the Stormsmiths can hit a stealth model from more than 5″ away. When the Stormcall hits the target they take a POW 10. This is great against low ARM infantry and most support solos, but don’t look to damage heavy infantry or warjacks.  However, it is important to note that the stormcall will disrupt a warjack, so even though it won’t be doing damage, it will still impact an opponents ‘jacks.

The More the Merrier

Cygnar-Firefly

While a single Stormsmith can target a single model, two smiths can target up to two models in a line between them (Surge) and three models can target up to three models in the triangle they form (Triangulation). That’s up to 9 Stomcalls per turn when you have all three Stormsmiths on the table. Even better is that it’s not just Stormsmiths that can be used for Surges and Triangulations. The Firefly warjack and Stormpods from the Stormwall also work for this. The Stormwall is a breath of fresh air for the Stormsmiths. Placing a triangulation point anywhere within 10″ is remarkable and makes these really good solos exponentially better.

Weapons

The Stormsmith’s only weapon is the Rod. At MAT 5, P+S 7, there can’t be many reasons you would ever do this as opposed to just using Stormcall.

Compatible Warcasters

These guys work well in a lot of lists. They can hunt stealthy solos, disrupt jacks and fry triangles of infantry. As you might expect Nemo is where these guys get an extra boost.

Nemo2 (eNemo) - Elite Cadre means Stormcalls will hit more often and do more damage. Nemo3 - The feat boosts all electrical damage rolls so if you can pull off a three-man Stormcall Triangulation you could get 12 boosted POW 10s.

The Stormsmiths bring one thing to the table: Stormcall, but it is so good that it’s all they need.  At 1pt and FA3, you will sometimes find these guys make excellent filler for that extra point or two in your list. But with Nemo2 and Nemo3 and the Stormwall, these guys become a core part of the list that will do everything from infantry clearing to stealth solo hunting.
