Cygnaran Storm is a series focusing on individual models and units in Cygnar. Today we put the spotlight on the Journeyman Warcaster.
Affectionately known as “Junior”, the Journeyman is perhaps the most popular Solo in Cygnar. For the most part he’s viewed as a one-trick pony, casting Arcane Shield and hiding in the back while upkeeping it. However, for three points you can get so much more out of him.
+3 ARM is a great spell, and Jr. will rarely be in play without having this upkeep on someone. Most often it will be your Warcaster, but early in the game consider using it on a forward unit or ‘jack to keep them alive and blocking up the field. However, once it’s cast it’s only an upkeep, leaving the Journeyman with two focus.Boosted POW 12
Two focus is enough to boost both the attack and damage rolls for Junior’s Hand Cannon. A boosted POW 12 kills warrior models, it’s been known to kill Warcasters. At a lowly RAT 4, the Journeyman will want to at least stand still but preferably boost to hit as well. Keep in mind the Hand Cannon is RNG 12, that means Jr. can stay behind the lines while still picking off solos or infantry leading the enemy advance.More ‘Jacks
The Journeyman is a Battlegroup Commander, meaning he can have his own battlegroup of ‘jacks and he can assign them Focus. Now with only three focus (2 if you’re upkeeping Arcane Shield), you won’t want to support a lot of ‘jacks. Typically one ‘Jack fits the bill, and often it will be a range-oriented warjack that’s light on focus. A Hunter can be a good choice as it is light on focus needs and it’s doubling of the control area is valuable for the Focus 3 Journeyman. A Defender is another example of a ‘jack that typically doesn’t want more than 1-2 focus.
Weapons Hand Cannon
Already discussed, but worth mentioning again. Take your shots when you can. There are merits to keeping Jr. hidden for his upkeep of Arcane Shield, but no one is going argue the merits of a boosted POW 12.Mechanika Blade
The Journeyman does have a sword if it really comes down to melee, but that’s generally not a good position to be in. The best you can say about it is that it’s a Magical Weapon and he can boost it. At P+S 10, you’ll probably want to charge and boost the hit from a lowly MAT 5.Compatible Warcasters
Another of those models that fits well with every Cygnar caster. Even if the caster has their own Arcane Shield it doesn’t hurt to have two. Often you’ll see Junior with the lower-ARM casters like Caine or Nemo, but even the tougher casters like to bring Junior along to keep the troops buffed or keep a Warjack’s ARM up.Special Notes
While he has warcaster in his name, the Journeyman is not actually a warcaster. So warcaster-specific rules and effects do not apply to him. He does, however, have most of the benefits that warcasters do such as Battlegroup Commander, Focus Manipulation, Fearless, etc.
Arcane Shield is one of those spells that work well for everything from casters to infantry to the Stormwall. Having an additional one to cast is invaluable. Coming along with it is a boostable POW 12 RNG 12 Hand Cannon and the ability to run an additional warjack with actual focus. The Journeyman is a key model for building Cygnar lists, a must-have model for his strong support role.
